How this is made

Aeruga revolves around one promise: old wisdom, tested, for those building something today. A promise about testing deserves an honest colophon. So here, without making it prettier than it is, is how these books and essays come about. And why they look the way they look.

The method

Every book follows the same arc. It takes one question, what to believe, how to act, what makes death give meaning to life. And draws it from long before our era all the way to now. Not to show how much there is to know, but to show that the question is old and that you are standing right in the middle of it.

With every contested claim there is a line here that is so often missing elsewhere: the strongest version and the strongest counter-voice. No straw man easy to knock over, but the best argument the other side would make. We leave the judgement to you. A writer who forces a conclusion on you treats you as an audience; we try to treat you as a thinker.

And we separate fact from interpretation. That something happened is a fact; what it means is the long human conversation. Where we interpret, we say so. Where we guess, we call it a hypothesis.

The confidence scores

At the bottom of every stage stands a number between 0 and 1. It is not an ornament. It tells you how firm the ground is: high where the facts and the textual history are settled, lower where interpretation weighs heavily or the sources contradict one another. A 0.74 is not a weakness we hide. It is an honest measure of difficulty, and an invitation to weigh things up for yourself.

Dates, publication years and the attribution of ideas to the right thinker we check before they go into the book. Take the well-known thought that history does not repeat itself, but it does rhyme. It is usually attributed to Mark Twain. But there is no evidence for that, and its real origin is uncertain; an early variant turns up with Theodor Reik. So we do not pin it to a single name with any certainty, and we retell the thought rather than pretend the exact wording is settled. Because we do not quote verbatim where we are not sure. And a house that rests on testing must have no cracks in its foundation.

The role of people and machines

Now the part most websites keep quiet about, and that we say out loud instead: these texts are made with the help of artificial intelligence, under human direction.

The division of labour can be named honestly. The machine helps to search, organise and phrase, and prepares a first draft, the fast, broad work. The human asks the question, chooses the thinkers, checks the facts, seeks the strongest counter-voice, separates fact from interpretation, weighs and confirms the confidence score, and carries the responsibility. The judgement, the weighing, the care for what is right, that is human work, and it is precisely there that the value lies.

We do not believe that keeping quiet here would be honest, and certainly not for a place that wears honesty as its brand. In a time when text streams cheap, self-assured and nameless from the tap, the rare thing is not yet another slick opinion. It is curated, testable thinking that dares to show its own uncertainty and leaves the last word to you.
